The City of San Buenaventura is indeed the “City of Good Fortune” with its surrounding mountains, miles of uncrowded beaches and mild year-round climate. The City’s Parks Division is proud of its numerous historical sites, bike paths and parks, many featuring magnificent views and several located right on the beachfront.
The parks system includes more than 700 acres of parkland and facilities serving various interests from sailing, surfing, tennis, league sports, skateboard parks, tot lots and picnic areas. View Reservations & Use Policy.
Two parks have areas for dogs to run off leash. Click Here for more information. Camino Real has a fenced off-leash area. Arroyo Verde allows dogs to be off leash during specific hours. The City’s parks also contain historic sites depicting the City’s early California heritage.
The park system includes two par-72 championship golf courses designed by renowned architect William Bell. A new 100-acre community sports park opened in 2005 with an aquatics center, water slides, competition pool, multi-use sports fields and bike paths. Four additional sports fields are being constructed and are scheduled to open by summer 2008. View Ventura Community Park web pages.
Our newest park is Montalvo Hill Park, opened in early 2008. Located behind Montalvo Square, the six-acre park features open play areas, basketball court, playground, picnic tables, benches and other amenities. The park is home to two bronze sculptures called Movement and Kids Play. The latter was a collaborative effort between the artist and local elementary students and adds a touch of whimsy to the park.
Two new neighborhood parks are in the final planning stages in residential developments at the east end of the City.
The City also cares for an urban forest of 32,000 trees that improve the air and provide visual interest to pedestrians and motorists
