The Ventura City Council voted to appoint Councilmember MikeTracy as Mayor and newly-installed Councilmember Cheryl Heitmann as Deputy Mayor during the regularly scheduled council meeting on Monday, December 5. Both will serve a two-year term in their appointed roles.

Mike Tracy was first elected to the Ventura City Council in November 2009. He recently completed two years as the City’s deputy mayor and will serve as mayor for the last two years of his four-year term. Tracy was a 30-year member of the Ventura Police Department and served as chief of police from 1999 to 2005. He earned a degree in leadership from Cal Poly Pomona, and served on the board of the California Police Officer’s Association. He was a founding member of the Ventura Police Activities League and helped organize Ventura’s police storefronts, which ultimately led to the formation of the current community councils. He is a lifelong resident of Ventura and has served on the boards of the Boys and Girls Club, Caregivers, Police Activities League, and the Salvation Army.

As a member of the Council, Tracy has represented the city on the Ventura Auto Center Dealers' and New Car Associations, the Economic Development Ad Hoc Committee, the Compensation Task Force, and has served as a liaison on the Ventura Unified School District City/School Committee and the Ventura Housing Authority.

“I look forward to working with the citizens of Ventura, elected officials and community leaders to further expand and retain existing businesses in our city and foster a safe and clean environment, ” Tracy said. “Our Council will continue to work together on the needs of the community.”

Newly elected council member Cheryl Heitmann was installed on Monday night for a four-year term and was appointed by her fellow council members to a two-year term as Deputy Mayor. Heitmann was the top vote getter in the November City Council election. In her professional life, she is the Executive Director of the Ventura Music Festival and serves on the boards of the Ventura County United Way, the Ventura Chamber of Commerce, the Ventura Visitors and Convention Bureau and the Downtown Ventura Partners. She previously served two terms as an elected Trustee for the Ventura Community College District, serving as President of that board.
