Ventura’s Affordable Housing Program works to maintain reasonably priced units
The City of Ventura’s Affordable Housing Program and Housing Preservation loan programs are administered by the Housing Authority of the City of San Buenaventura (an agency separate from the City of Ventura). Created in 1949, the Housing Authority’s primary function is to develop and administer housing assistance programs in the City of Ventura in order to provide quality affordable housing for eligible low-income families.
To ensure continuing affordability, the Housing Authority monitors resale activity of the City’s existing 500+ income-restricted units. Currently, 27 owners of restricted affordable homes in the City of Ventura have submitted a “Notice of Intent to Sell.” The City, in its partnership with the Housing Authority (HA), is attempting to maintain these units as affordable units to ensure they remain and are resold as affordable housing.
The City is currently working with the HA to proactively market the affordable homes that are currently for sale to ensure they are sold to moderate and low income families who intend to occupy the home as their primary residence. Specifically, the HA keeps an updated interest list, works with real estate agents, connects home sellers with qualified home buyers, and will be releasing a publicity campaign to inform the general public about the availability of these affordable homes.
Susan Everett, Affordable Housing Program Director, says, “It is great time to buy a home in the City of Ventura because housing prices are very affordable right now.”
In addition to the Affordable Housing Program, the City assists residents in repairing homes, manufactured homes and mobile homes through the Housing Preservation, and Mobile Home Rehabilitation loan programs.
