Ventura City Firefighters responded to a report of a wood pile burning next to a structure. Upon arrival, fire units found a pile of debris, which included discarded mattress, box spring, and combustible wood products actively burning next to a dumpster and against a two story structure. The fire was lapping up a wall and very close to igniting and extending into the building. Quick action by the firefighters brought the fire under control with three minutes after arrival. The fire had also damaged the paint to a van parked nearby. Damage to the vehicle and structure was estimated to be approximately $7,000. Ventura PD and a fire investigator interviewed witnesses and determined that the fire cause may be related to the discarding of smoking materials by transients. Actual cause remains undetermined.
