Victim(s):   Glenda Chittenden, Ventura Resident

Suspect(s):     Dustin Kemick, 28 yrs., Ventura Resident

Report #:  11-0042

Narrative:

The victim was inside the Vons Grocery Store.  She was shopping and placed her purse in the shopping cart.  She walked the short distance across the aisle to retrieve and item to purchase.  She was only 2-3 feet away from the cart and her purse.  The suspect, Kemick, walked by and stole her purse from the cart.  Citizens in the aisle saw the theft and chased Kemick.  The citizens, along with store employees, captured Kemick and detained him until police arrived.  The purse was recovered and returned to Chittenden.  Kemick was arrested and booked for Petty Theft.

Upon further investigation, Kemick was walking around the store and may have attempted the same crime moments earlier.  However, based on the circumstances, Police were not able to confirm this information so no additional charges were filed.

The Ventura Police Department would like to remind citizens to be conscience of these types of crimes.  Criminals look for opportunities in stores.  Criminals will look for unattended items and can steal them in a matter of seconds.  Other times, an open purse may be targeted.  The criminal will take only the wallet, left in plain view, from inside the purse.  In these cases, victims do not realize the theft has occurred until they get to the sales register.
