Free Ocean Friendly Garden Classes begin March 10, Register Now

The City of Ventura and the Surfrider Foundation’s Ventura County Chapter will co-host an educational series of free Ocean Friendly GardenTM (OFG) classes open to all Ventura County residents. The series starts with a Watershed Basics Class on March 10. Participants will learn the fundamentals of OFG and their garden’s relationship to our watershed. This indoor class will be held at Ventura City Hall, 501 Poli Street, in the Community Room from 9am to noon. Space is limited; register at ww2.surfrider.org/ventura/VenturaOFG.html. Refreshments and a continental breakfast will be served. Make the class ‘low waste’ and bring your own mug.

A Hands-On Workshop (HOW) is scheduled for March 25, 9am to noon, to be held on-site at a local resident’s home where participants will conduct a site evaluation and design a garden. This workshop is held outdoors -- bring/wear sun protection and sturdy shoes. Refreshments will be provided.

The third event is a Garden Assistance Party (GAP) on May 12 from 9am to 4pm, which will transform a front lawn from water-thirsty boring to water-thrifty beautiful. This workshop is held outdoors -- bring/wear sun protection and sturdy shoes. Refreshments will be provided.

A special course for landscape professionals will be held April 24. The fee for this course is $250 and scholarships are available. Register at: www.greengardensgroup.com/programs/professional-paths/core-concepts-workshop.

All events in the series are funded through a grant from the California Coastal Commission Whale Tail License Plate Program. The classes will be taught by G3, the Green Gardens Group, a sustainable landscaping education and consulting firm based in Los Angeles, California.
