2009 Part I Crime Statistics

The number of violent crimes reported decreased by 29, or 7.3%. As the chart below illustrates, unfortunately the most notable increase was in the category of homicides, from 2 to 5, representing a 150% increase.

The number of property crimes reported decreased by 200 from 3,299 in 2008 to 3,099 in 2009. This represents a 6.1% decrease in property crimes. The largest decrease was in the number of reported motor vehicle thefts which dropped by over 23%. The next largest decrease was in the area of non-residential burglaries with a 19% decrease.

The total number of violent and property crimes combined decreased by 6.2%, from 3,696 to 3,467.

With the adoption of specific goals and performance measures the VPD continues to focus its efforts on repeat violent and property crime offenders, gang, and narcotic investigations. In 2009 we will maintain our goal to reduce the number of violent and property crimes.
