Jose (Joe) Salsedo, Equipment Operator, has worked for the Public Works Department for almost 35 years. The City Manager's blog recently highlighted Joe and the often overlooked staff that responds to emergencies at all hours citywide.
Joe regularly provides storm-patrol duties and he remembers many rainy nights he worked to prevent the floods that used to engulf Main and Santa Clara Streets before a fix was applied at Kalorama.
Five years ago, in the wake of the School Fire, Joe was part of a three-man crew that spent most of the night repeatedly unclogging a drain engulfed in debris flowing down from the burned-over hillsides.
In 1997, Joe was nominated “Employee of the Year.” In 2005, he was the recipient of the Richard Ortega Award. The Richard Ortega award is given to those employees who best exemplify the attributes of a beloved Public Works employee, Richard Ortega, which are: providing excellent customer service, taking pride in work, having a positive attitude and being a great team worker.
