Floodplain Management
FEMA COMMUNITY EDUCATION MEETING ON JANUARY 14
The city of Ventura will host the second of two public education meetings on Thursday, January 14 at 4:00 p.m. in the Community Meeting Room at City Hall to assist property owners in understanding the Federal EmergencyManagement Agency (FEMAs) new Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (DFIRMs) set to go in effect January 20, 2010. The community outreach is to provide property owners with an opportunity to learn more about changes to the local floodplain maps and the effects those changes will have.
The City has identified significant zone alignment discrepancies between current paper FIRMs and the anticipated DFIRM. City staff is currently working with FEMA to assist FEMA in making the necessary alignment corrections to the DFIRM. Parcel owners adjacent to water ways and/or flood zones who do not currently have a flood insurance policy should contact FEMA as soon as possible to understand the insurance requirements.
PURPOSE
The City of Ventura is using this web site to educate, inform, and direct interested parties to regulations, policies, and documents associated with the use of property within the City that is likely to be subject to flooding by stormwater.
ORGANIZATION OF AUTHORITY
FEMA administers a National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) that establishes Floodways and Zones on maps (FIRM's), imposes Development and Use Standards, and issues Policies of Flood Insurance.
The County Watershed Protection District collects a special property related tax to fund Regional compliance with FEMA's NFIP, to monitor and study regional storm water flows and systems, and to facilitate Regional storm water management cooperation.
The City of Ventura collects information from FEMA, the County Watershed Protection District, and our own storm water management programs, facilitates FEMA NFIP development compliance, and takes enforcement action when required to maintain compliance with FEMA's NFIP standards.
