Public invited to drop off non-perishable food items at 12 Starbucks locations for Thanksgiving Baskets Nov. 1-17

Ventura residents are invited to celebrate the spirit of America’s favorite holiday by donating non-perishable food items or cash to buy food by November 17 to fill Thanksgiving Baskets to provide a complete holiday meal for 100 hungry families in our city. The public is welcome to drop off non-perishable goods—packaged, boxed or canned vegetables, cranberry sauce, stuffing, gravy and mashed potatoes and bottled juice—to a dozen participating Starbucks.

Teen Voice—a high school leadership program operating on five local Ventura campuses —is coordinating this project and collecting food items Nov. 1-17 to provide a full Thanksgiving dinner to needy low-income families. City staff and all high schools are donating the perishable items. For more information on donating cash contact City of Ventura Youth Programs Supervisor Mario Robinson at 805.654.7807.

“Since 2001 we have fed over 1,000 families who would be without a Thanksgiving meal,” said Mario Robinson, PAL Executive Director and Youth Programs Supervisor for the City of Ventura Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Partnerships, which sponsors both the Teen Voice and Thanksgiving Baskets programs as part of its Community Partnerships outreach. “2011 marks the tenth year of this program, started by the Ventura Police Activities League (PAL) joined by the Teen Voice High School Leadership Program.”

All donated items should be dropped off at Starbucks locations by Thursday, November 17, at noon, or at Ventura City Hall Department of Parks, Recreation & Community Partnerships at 501 Poli Street, Room 226. Baskets will be assembled at Westpark Community Center, 450 W. Harrison Ave., where families will pick them up.

The mission of Teen Voice, with the support of the Ventura Unified School District, is to build positive relationships between high school students and the community by providing students opportunities for community involvement and betterment of their school, neighborhood and city. PAL aims to promote involvement between youth, police, and Ventura residents, by providing meaningful sports, academic and recreation programs that encourage the development of sportsmanship, friendship, citizenship and good will within the youth of the City of Ventura.

Teen Voice collects jeans to donate to shelters & charities for homeless people Dec 9-Jan 19

Teen Voice—a high school leadership program operating on five local campuses throughout Ventura—has been working since Thanksgiving on its third annual yearend community project of collecting pairs of new and used adult-sized jeans by January 19 to donate to shelters and charities to make a difference in the lives of homeless people in Ventura. New and used men’s and women’s jeans, sizes 32-38, are requested, but all adult sizes are acceptable.

Jeans may also be dropped off at Ventura City Hall, 501 Poli Street, Room 226.

“Teen Voice is once again partnering with Starbucks Coffee, the Ventura Unified School District High Schools" said City of Ventura Youth Programs Supervisor Mario Robinson, Teen Voice Advisor. “We are asking for the help of our community’s members in many organizations to reach our goal by encouraging them to drop off clean pairs of new and used jeans at any of twelve convenient Starbucks locations in Ventura, Ojai, Oxnard and Port Hueneme. We are hoping to unite residents throughout western Ventura County, individual high school students and staff, church groups, neighbors and family members by requesting their support and participation in this project.”

Teen Voice students originated the “Teens for Jeans” idea in the summer of 2008 during their annual Leadership Retreat as an effective project to fulfill actual needs of Ventura’s homeless when they researched and discovered that clothes pantries run out of jeans by mid-January, leaving many homeless people without sufficiently warm winter clothing.
