Nature Study Presentations

Nature Study Presentations FOR THE CLASSROOM

Our colorful slide show presentations and hands-on materials bring a variety of topics to life for students. Let us come to your classroom (local schools) or join us at Arroyo Verde Center for a one-hour program.

Rock 'n Roll Geology Program For 2nd through 6th grade

Cost: $2.50 per child with a $75 minimum. Non-resident fee please add $25 per program. Have "Seismic Sam" visit your classroom! A fast-paced, one-hour classroom program jam-packed with information, hands-on rock and mineral displays and exciting experiments. This program includes:

  • Slide show featuring local geology
  • Class demonstrations (like Mr. Wizard)
  • Geology displays, "mystery minerals," and science experiments

Coastal Birds of California For 3rd through 6th grade

Cost: $2.50 per child with a $75 minimum. Non-resident fee please add $25 per program.
After participating in this program, you'll never look out along the beach and see "just a bunch of birds" again. This one-hour classroom presentation includes:

  • Bird identification, training the eye to look for key characteristics
  • Hands-on materials
  • Birds, bills and feet match-up activity

(Note: This program may also be enjoyed as part of our two-part Wildlife Lagoons field trip).

Life at the Edge of the Sea For 3rd through 6th grade

Cost: $2.50 per child with a $75 minimum. Non-resident fee please add $25 per program.
The Ventura coastline is home to many plants and animals. It offers a variety of habitats, including: sandy beaches, a river estuary, fragile dunes and a relatively rare cobble shoreline containing numerous tidepool animals. Learn about this unique area and how we can help protect it. This one-hour program includes:

  • A slide introduction to coastal habitat
  • Hands-on materials and intertidal invertebrate collection
  • "Feeding frenzy" ­ sea creature dress up game

(Note: This program may also be enjoyed as part of our two-part Seaside Wilderness Outreach).

Marine Mammals For 3rd through 6th grade

Cost: $2.50 per child with a $75 minimum. Non-resident fee please add $25 per program.
Learn about the spectacular world of marine mammals, with special emphasis on local species. We'll explore the adaptations that allow them to live aquatic lives. This one-hour program includes:

  • A fast-moving slide introduction to whales, seals, sea lions, and sea otters
  • Hands-on materials including baleen, whale bones, skulls, teeth, and whale barnacles
  • Diving adaptation and whale feeding activities
  • Word scramble game
  • Whale sound recordings

Bats and Other Spooky Night Creatures
For 1st through 6th grade

Cost: $2.50 per child, with a $75 minimum. Non-resident fee please add $25 per program.
Do bats come creeping while we're sleeping? Are they our friends or foes? What other creatures glide, slither or creep through the night? Learn all the facts about this fascinating creature and other nocturnal animals such as owls and opossums. This one-hour presentation includes:

  • A slide presentation on bats and other nocturnal creatures
  • Hands-on materials and special tips on how to befriend bats
  • Songs and costumed activity

Endangered Species For 2nd through 6th grade

Cost: $2.50 per child, with a $75 minimum. Non-resident fee please add $25 per program.
As animal species rapidly disappear from the earth, students will discover that wildlife species right here in Ventura County are threatened and some are even endangered. Students will learn which of our local plants and animals are at risk and how we can help them. This one-hour program includes:

  • A slide presentation on local threatened and endangered species
  • Animal character activities
  • Hands-on materials
