Westside

Westside & North Avenue Community Plan and Code

On March 3, 2020, City of Ventura staff, Jeff Lambert, Community Development Director, and Sid White, Economic Development and Revitalization Manager, presented to the Westside Community Council an overview of California Redevelopment and the potential benefits of utilizing redevelopment in the Westside Community.  Below are links to the various materials that were discussed and distributed:

Redevelopement 101 slide show presentation.  Click on the following link to see the slideshow covering the basics about California redevelopment, the activities and accomplishments of redevelopment in the Downtown Project Area, and the potential benefits that the Westside Community could realize from a Westside Redevelopment Area.

Handouts.  Several handouts were available that further explain the redevelopment process and particulars about the Westside, as described below.

The Westside revitalization process began in 1998 with Ventura Vision and was carried through by City staff and the Comp Plan Advisory Committee from 2001-August 2004. Concurrently, the Westside community devised Shaping our Community's Future: Revitalizing the Westside in 2002. The momentum continued with City Council's adoption of the Economic Development Strategy in 2005, which highlighted the Westside as focus area number three and the Upper North Avenue as focus area number four.

In August 2005, Ventura adopted its new General Plan. This plan will serve as a citywide blueprint for growth and development for the next twenty years. The westside and North Avenue Communities are areas where the city has identified the need for a new community plan and development code. As a valued member of the community, you're encouraged to attend upcoming "Avenue to the Future" community meetings. Your involvement and feedback will help to ensure that Ventura's Westside continues to be a great place to live, work and play!

California Polytechnic State University

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo has selected the City's westside and North Avenue communities as their student project. As part of their studies, students will complete an assessment of area characteristics, and will present concepts for urban design. View their work in progress:
