"Ventura has undergone a major facelift, with renovations to the historic downtown, a burgeoning art scene, and an influx of cutting-edge restaurants.
"Although it keeps its mellow pace and still has its surfers, the rest is history. It's now the kind of place where the man in the white jacket perusing produce at the farmers' market turns out to be the chef who prepares your meal that evening . . . "

Rick, I wholeheartedly agree that the blurb in the sunset magazine was a very good start. But if you will notice it was less than a whole page, now if you notice the other article on Pacific Palisades and other locations they usually run 2 to 4 pages. Where the Ventura article only mentioned one chef and a couple of restaurants the other article ran the gambit on stores and other attractions.
I feel our Visitor and Convention folks are missing the boat when it comes to free advertisement that the Sunset puts out. They should be compiling an article and submitting it to the magazine for publication, that way we could probably be really getting a great review.

Sunset's No. 1 pick for spots to visit in Ventura is the top of Grant Park. The 1-acre Serra Cross site is owned by the non-profit Serra Cross Conservancy, which is planning an extensive facelift for this aging property. Please help make this beloved spot a true jewel in Ventura's crown.

I think that's called having a publicist. Who fills that role in Ventura ? The Bahamas uses a starfish logo rather well. They show five starfish lined up on a sandy beach in a row about 12" apart with the ocean water washing up just below; ie. a FIVE STAR place. Why doesn't the Ventura publicist pick up on that idea ?
Actually the Story in Sunset came about as a result of Ventura Visitors & Convention Bureau hosting the writer durnig a visit to Ventura. The VCB regualry works with Sunset and other travel and lifestyle publications to gain coverage on our city. The size of the article falls to the discretion of the editorial staff at the publication and there is also often an effort on behalf of the publication to be equitable over the course of several months. In other words, Ventura may have been the subject of multiple smaller features vs. one larger one on the Palisades.
That being said, if any of you wish to lobby for more Ventura coverage, please do write to the publisher and say so!
The Ventura Visitors & Convention bureau regulary submits articles for publication in journals including Sunset.
