Greenhouse Gas Emissions
"I say the debate is over. We know the science. We see the threat. And we know the time for action is now."
If you look at the chart on this page you can see that the amount of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere has increased significantly over the last century. The main reason the CO2 concentration has increased is the extraction and burning of fossil fuels, which releases CO2 into the air.
Most scientists believe that this increase level of CO2 in the atmosphere will trap heat and result in major environmental changes.
The most common manmade sources of CO2 today are power plants and automobiles. This is true for the City also. The electricity we use in our buildings and to pump water and the fuel we use for our City vehicles produce millions of pounds of CO2.
But the City is taking steps to decrease this environmental impact. Through the use of renewable energy, energy conservation, and fuel-efficient vehicles we are reducing our energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.
